73 Direct Flights and 37 Airlines: Why Punta Cana Just Became the Most Connected Caribbean Airport for North Americans

When buyers ask me what really separates Punta Cana from other Caribbean second-home markets, my answer is usually shorter than they expect: the airport.

Punta Cana International (PUJ) is the most connected airport in the Caribbean for North American travelers — and the 2026 schedule just widened the gap meaningfully.

Where you can fly direct in 2026

From Canada, PUJ now offers nonstop service from at least a dozen cities, with carriers including Air Canada, WestJet, Air Transat, Flair, and Arajet. Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Quebec City, Halifax, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Moncton, and several smaller markets all sit on the route map. Several new routes are scheduled to begin operating in 2026, including additional service from Calgary, Halifax, and London (Ontario).

From the United States, daily nonstop service connects Punta Cana to New York (JFK and Newark), Miami, Boston, Atlanta, Chicago, Charlotte, Philadelphia, Washington (Dulles), Dallas, Fort Lauderdale, and a growing list of secondary markets. American Airlines, Delta, United, JetBlue, Spirit, Frontier, and Avelo all serve the route. Kansas City was added as a nonstop in early 2026.

Total picture: 37 airlines operate from PUJ, serving more than 120 airports worldwide as of early 2026.

Why direct flight access drives property values

Buyers under-weight this factor and then over-weight it the moment they own. The reality is that the convenience of flying from your home airport to your second home — without a connection, without an overnight, without a lost weekend each way — is the single biggest predictor of whether snowbirds actually use the property they bought.

Markets with poor flight access struggle with rental occupancy and resale demand. Markets with dense, frequent direct service from major North American population centers benefit from a wider buyer pool, stronger rental velocity, and faster resale liquidity.

Punta Cana is in the latter category — and the gap is widening, not narrowing.

What this means for snowbirds specifically

If you are a snowbird in your fifties or sixties evaluating where to spend December through March, flight friction is the dealbreaker most buyers don't think hard enough about. A two-hour drive to the airport plus a connection plus a wait plus a second flight is a five-hour-each-way commitment. Multiply that by twelve to twenty trips a year, factor in the fatigue, and many properties go underused within three years of purchase.

Direct service from your home airport — under four hours wheels-up to landing in Punta Cana from most Eastern Canadian and US cities — changes the calculus entirely. The home gets used. The lifestyle case for owning the property actually plays out.

What this means for investors

Rental demand follows route maps. Every new direct flight is a new tap into a fresh metro buyer base — both for vacation renters who book your unit and for future buyers who could become the eventual exit.

When WestJet added Calgary–PUJ service for 2026, that opened roughly 1.5 million metro Calgary residents to a four-hour-and-change direct ride to Bávaro. That is a marketable rental and resale audience that did not exist on the route map two years ago.

The pattern compounds. More flights bring more tourists. More tourists fill more rental nights. Stronger rental performance attracts more investor buyers. More investor buyers feed more projects. More projects justify more flights.

Punta Cana is the only Caribbean destination where that flywheel is spinning at this scale in 2026.
